Recall Games Part 2

Recall Games (Part 2)

We want your dog to show up with great enthusiasm. This means you need to be more exciting and rewarding to come to than the thing they must leave (playing, friends, toys, squirrels, the mailman out the window, and so on)

It's very important that the tone of your recall word be solid, crisp, clear, and 1 syllable. You need to mean it the first time you say it.

Come! or Here!

The light banter, high pitched, playful "c'mere", many of you do with puppies, littles and new to you dogs isn't very "commanding". Trust me when your dog is running away from you towards danger you tone will not be playful.

Don't get hung up on the word commanding.

The Recall command is a life saving skill. It is NOT negotiable -- ever.

As you begin practicing recall even in the safety of your home or fenced in yard -- use a leash.

Yes, use a leash. A Long Line. You need a way to follow through.

If you call out the word Come! and your dog doesn't begin moving toward you -- Reel them in. Now you can begin your motivational words and enthusiasm to be their cheerleader.

Do not let them fail. Don't let them off the hook. Don't then offer a treat. Do not become Snoopy's teacher and have the words you say have no meaning. Don't give up.

Yes, you can still pay them for showing up after the sit or make eye contact with you, but do NOT use any other words than Come! Don't show your treat pouch, don't shake the treat bag. Don't offer a treat.

You must be believable, clear, and follow through.
Every.Single.Time.
